관계대명사 that

관계대명사 that은 선행사가 사람인지 사물인지 동물인지 관계없이 주격, 목적격 관계대명사로 쓸 수 있습니다.

 

관계대명사 that을 쓰는경우

1) 선행사에 사람과 사물, 동물이 혼합 되었을때.

2) 선행사가 -thing으로 끝나는 대명사일 때.

3) 선행사에 최상급, 서수 또는 the only, the same, the very all, every, little, few 등의 표현이 포함 될때.

4) 문장 앞에 의문사가 있을때.

 

관계대명사 that을 쓸수 없는 경우 

콤마(,)뒤, 전치사 뒤에는 나올수 없습니다.

 

Ex)

I told you everything that i know.

He is the only person that i can trust.

Who was the person that you contracted.

 

 

관계대명사 what

관계대명사 what은 선행사를 포함하는 관계대명사이다. the thing(s) which( that )와 같은 뜻이며 ~하는것 이라고 해석합니다.

He showed me the jacket ( that he bought ).

=> He showed me what he bought.

따라서 관게대명사 what이 쓰이면 1) 앞에 선행사가 올 수 없으며 2) what + 불완전한절 형태 자체가 명사절이 되어

문장의 주어, 목적어, 보어로 쓰인다.

 

Ex)

I don't care what( = the things which ) people say.

They showed us what they bought.

Ancient artist were drawing what they were seeing.
